Here's how it works

Your routes to access specialist treatment will depend if your plan has a guided option.

Guided members:

Available for members on our Business Health, Personal Health and Axa Health Plan who have chosen a guided option, or Large Corporate members whose company has selected Advance Pathway or Advance Fast Track.

Open referral

  • Ask your GP for an open referral (that’s a referral that doesn’t name a particular specialist, it Just gives the type of specialism you need).
  • Talk to one of our live chat agents or call us on the number in your membership documents and we will source and book an appointment for you with an appropriate specialist, usually within 20 miles of your chosen location (or within 5 miles in central London).
  • We can only cover treatment with specialists we have sourced for you.

Non-guided members:

You can choose from an open referral, named referral or source your own specialist.

Open referral

  • Ask your GP for an open referral (that’s a referral that doesn’t name a particular specialist, it just gives the type of specialism you need).
  • Talk to one of our live chat agents or call us on the number in your membership documents and we will source the names of up to three appropriate specialists from our smaller list for you to book an appointment with.
  • These specialists will usually be within 20 miles of your chosen location (or within 5 miles in central London). The hospital you then use will depend on the specialist we’ve sourced for you, the hospital may not be the nearest to you.

Named referral

  • Ask your GP to give the name of a private specialist who works in the specialism you need.
  • Talk to one of our live chat agents or call us on the number in your membership documents and we will check this is a specialist we work with. If it is and you’re happy to use the specialist, you can then book your appointment´
  • If you’d prefer us to source the specialist for you, you can select an open referral

Sourcing your own specialist

  • Alternatively, if you’d like to research and source your own specialist, you can check the names of the specialists who work in the specialism you need on your hospital list. Details of where to access your hospital list can be found in your handbook. You’ll need an open referral from your GP to be able to source your own specialist.
  • Talk to one of our live chat agents or call us on the number in your membership documents with the names you’ve sourced, and we can check whether they’re specialists we work with.
