Which benefits do employees value most?

Employee benefits can sometimes be an overlooked aspect of recruitment and employee retention, with salary often being viewed as the primary motivator for candidates. Salary does, of course, still play an important role, with one survey from Canada Life finding that 34% of employees would like their company to offer salaries or bonuses at or above the industry average.1 However, employees and job seekers are increasingly placing a priority on the overall benefits package on offer when job hunting.

One survey found that 42% of the general workforce said employee benefits were a priority, with this rising to 55% of 18-34 year olds who believe that a good benefits package is the most important thing they look for when searching for a job. Despite this, 45% of employees felt their employee benefits package was inadequate.2

As well as having benefits for your team, an employee benefits package can also have a positive impact on your business. Research from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) found that 60% of SMEs acknowledge that providing health and wellbeing benefits has a high impact on supporting the productivity of their company.3

There are lots of employee benefits for small businesses to choose from, so it can be difficult to know which ones will best suit your business. Which benefits do employees value?

Private medical insurance

Private medical insurance is often cited as an important benefit by employees. One report found that health insurance is a key driver for over half (57%) of people when choosing a job.4

Before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, only around 12% of employees reported working from home.6 During 2022, the percentage of working adults reporting having worked from home varied between 25% and 40%6 which shows how popular remote working has become since the pandemic.

Offering training and career development opportunities to your employees can help keep them motivated and can help you to retain team members in your business. The type of training you offer will depend on the industry you operate in, as well as the needs of your team. A good place to start when developing a training programme for your team is to speak to each employee and ask them which skills they would like to develop. You can then start to tailor a training programme for each employee based on their priorities and skillset.
