Advanced Nurse Practitioners available through AXA Doctor at Hand

AXA Doctor at Hand users will soon be able to book an appointment with an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, or a GP, when they visit the AXA Doctor at Hand app or website.   

The inclusion of Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) into the AXA Doctor at Hand service will enable us to help more members at their time of need, without compromising on quality of care. As highly skilled healthcare professionals, ANPs are already regularly used in this capacity within both the NHS and across other private healthcare providers.  

Members will be directed to an either an ANP or GP appointment depending on their symptoms, but the option does remain for the member to select a GP if they prefer. With AXA Doctor at Hand, members can speak to a GP 24/7, and ANPs will be available 8am - 10pm, 365 days a year. 

About Advanced Nurse Practitioners in general practice

Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) are highly skilled professionals, educated to masters level in clinical practice. They have the authority to make autonomous decisions in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.   

ANPs work in an advanced autonomous role to provide assessment, treatment, and ongoing management independently for a patient throughout their healthcare journey. At Doctor Care Anywhere, ANPs will form an integral part of the consultation process with patients being holistically assessed from beginning to end by a highly qualified and experienced practitioner.  ANP's continuously work within their own scope of professional practice and have dedicated support from Doctor Care Anywhere's Clinical Director for ANP and safeguarding.   

What are ANPs able to do during a consultation? 

  • Take a full medical history, carry out assessments and examination 
  • Make a diagnosis and carry out treatment, including the prescribing of medicines 
  • Plan follow up treatment 
  • Refer patients for diagnostic tests and scans where appropriate.  
  • ANP's available 8am – 10pm, 365 days a year. 

 In some circumstances, depending on symptoms, it might be more appropriate for members to speak to a GP, in which case this option will be offered at the time of booking the appointment.
